Founder of Rainbow Divers-Vietnam, Jeremy Stein, successfully completed the inaugural Phu Quoc Half Marathon. An avid non-runner, he decided to elect for ‘on the job training’ rather than preparation for the big event. Jeremy now accepts that this was totally the wrong concept. “20 years ago I entered + completed the London Marathon. I put in a lot of training (and was obviously 20 years younger!) and felt pretty good at the end. However, the race in PQ was particularly grueling (and pretty boring). My legs, hips and knees were delicate to say the least for a couple of days after. So whilst I achieved my goal of finishing the race, it certainly wasn’t a record beating time!”
Jeremy, a PADI Course Director, is based in Saigon and actively teaches all PADI Diving Courses from Try-Dives to Divemaster + Instructor. He can be contacted via jeremy@divevietnam.com. The saigonwebsite is www.divevietnam.com/saigonpromo

Research on coral health in Nha Trang, Vietnam
Micaela, Kayrie and Jelena are measuring how much mucus the corals are producing from stressed and not stressed reefs. We have realized that corlas from the fish farms produce more mucus, and contain more bacteria (both good ones and bad ones) compared to the marine parks. The Vietnamese student Hanh studies the viruses ( a new field) and bacteria in coral mucus. We measure the volume of mucus produced over time. It may be a good indicator on coral health. Slimy indeed.
I hope I explained it well.
Very short: We measure slime production in corals (and yes they produce lot s of it) over time. The same type of corals in stressed areas produce more slime and bacteria than the ones from the protected marine parks.Slime production over time seems to be a good measure of coral health. The same study will be performed 4 times a year to find seasonal differences.

Dive Nha Trang, Vietnam, with Rainbow DIvers
Last weekend, I went with my best friend and our 18months old boys to Nha Trang,
On saturday morning we left the boys with their dads and went on Rainbow Divers's dive boat for 2 dives on Hon Mun Island.
On the first dive we saw 2 seahorses, a frogfish, lionfish, gorgeous anemone with their clownfish and shrimps,... on the second dive an octopus, a peacock mantis shrimp and lots of nudibranches and lovely and weird critters. We had a great morning and DiveMaster Duc was fabulous!

Dive in Vietnam!
VIETNAM DIVING UPDATE
(Courtesy of Rainbow Divers)
PHU QUOC: High season here with full diveboats traveling alternate days to explore the Northern sites and then the Southern Islands. Early start, 2 dives, lunch and back on land mid afternoon. Viz around 10m, water at 29c and the weather hot, hot, hot!
Enquiries nico@divevietmam.com
NHA TRANG: Slowly emerging from the ‘Rainy Season’. Still offering diving and PADI training courses daily. Conditions not the best, but 10m viz does allow you to see the macro critters that Vietnam is famous for! Enquiries to matt@divevietnam.com
WHALE ISLAND: This little piece of paradise is just north of Nha Trang, thus the same diving conditions apply. We welcome Lauren Holmes, our multilingual Instructor, who will now take over managing the diving here for the 2012 season. If you haven’t dived The 3 Kings, you haven’t dived Vietnam! Also, one of the best locations in Vietnam for beach + night diving! Enquiries to lauren@divevietnam.com
CON DAO: Undoubtedly the best diving in Vietnam, when conditions allow. February onwards should allow diving, but later in the year is better. Being so remote, it is very much at the mercy of the weather-gods! Enquiries to max@divevietnam.com
HOI AN: A little early in the season for diving here, but in a month or so, the dive conditions will offer excellent diving + training. Enquiries to ross@divevietnam.com
SAIGON: The best way to get dive certified is to start on-line with PADI and then spend one day in the pool in An Phu with your Instructor. Then you choose when to travel to one of the Ocean centres for 2-3 days to complete your course. Diving programmes available through the top International Schools. Part time Divemaster + Instructor courses also available. Want a unique Team Building Challenge or even a special Birthday ‘Splash Party’, it’s available! Enquiries to jeremy@divevietnm.com
PADI IDC: The 1st IDC + IE of 2012 will be held in Nha Trang. The 14 day programme starts on the 17th March and an IE immediately after. jeremy@divevietnam.com
